Saturday 23 September: March in North London vs social cleansing and global corporate privatisation of council land

Gordon Peters of Haringey Unite Community writes:

.... Haringey Council in north London is planning to go ahead with a £2 billion redevelopment of its public housing stock, gentrifying neighbourhoods and pricing local people out of living in the area. But a grassroots campaign against Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV) has been building.....
Partly because we found out from a Freedom of Information request, that there has been a secret ‘shadow’ inner cabinet process of meetings with Lendlease, the preferred developer, from before the point of them being agreed as preferred bidder for the contract on HDV. This included the member recently appointed to be on the putative HDV Board, Cllr. Elin Weston who is now the lead member for children and families.
I crowd funded £25,000 to pay for legal fees for a Judicial Hearing which will be held in the High Court - Royal Courts of Justice on The Strand - on 25 and 26 October, where there will be a presence outside from 9:30 on 25th.
This could lead to a landmark decision on how Councils, through their Cabinets, make decisions on property deals with big developers altering the whole nature of communities, at the expense of the less well-off and poor, as has been happening across London and mainly by Labour councils. Issues in front of the court include lack of basic democracy, consultation, equalities impact, commercial secrecy and fair process.
There is a march and demonstration in Haringey this Saturday, 23 September, against HDV. Folks from elsewhere in London will be attending too (e.g. Cressingham Gardens, Lambeth in south London, who are campaigning against a similar development in their borough and who have also been in Judicial Review).
The march starts at Tottenham Green, at 12 noon and onto Ducketts Common (site of the massive defeat of the NF by the community in the late 70s) down Green Lanes - one of the last roads that hasn’t been totally taken over by corporate franchises - and finishes at 2pm at the Manor House tube end of Finsbury Park. Sian Berry, Green Party London Assembly Member, has agreed to speak at demo/end of the march.
There is also a benefit gig with Potent Whisper and others at The Beehive pub in Tottenham from 7pm on Saturday evening. The film Dispossession, The Great Social Housing Swindle is being shown at the Haringey Independent Cinema in West Green this Thursday evening (21 September)

Immediately at risk are 1300 homes on Northumberland Park estate, Tottenham, behind them are hundreds and hundreds more on multiple estates, this is people's homes, this is the reality of London in 2017.
A good presence on the demonstration this coming Saturday will be really important to keep up the momentum that is building, especially given what is now happening in the local Labour Party. Support this campaign against this cruel social cleansing operation which is threatening to spread to many other parts of London.

From Architects for Social Housing:
Please support Beti’s campaign by naming, shaming and challenging the Guinness Partnership on social and in print media as the social cleansers and home wreckers that they are; by attending the next public meeting of the Northwold Estate campaign, which is being held from 7-9pm on Thursday, 8 December, in the Community Hall (131 Upper Clapton Rd, Hackney, London E5 9SA), where you will be able to hear Beti speak; and by giving her your active, professional (if applicable) and even financial support as she takes on the Guinness Partnership for her right to a home.

Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group Statement against reduced overall benefit cap, 7 November 2016

The following statement was delivered by leaflet and read out over 'bullhorn' outside Kilburn Jobcentre on Monday 7 November, the day the reduced overall benefit cap came in.

Reject the weak and rotten ideas of Tory hypocrites!

We say: No to caps on welfare — yes to rent controls

Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group are protesting 11am till Noon Monday 7 November 2016 outside Kilburn Jobcentre, as it's the first day of the welfare cap limiting families to a maximum of £20k a year in benefits (£23K if in London), which includes Housing costs.

Originally under David Cameron and George Osborne, a cap of £26k pa was introduced as it was the "average wage" .. the latest are "the average wage AFTER TAX" ... what will be the next excuse to bring it down? Please note that MPs when asked to just take the average wage themselves, have stuck to their £74,962 per year of TAXPAYERS money (PLUS generous expenses) ... so one rule for the sufferers of laws, another for the lawmakers! Sheer hypocrisy! Happily Cameron out of Parliament and Osborne shunted out of cabinet. Ha ha!

Most of the benefits money goes to private landlords, so the claimants never see most of that money. If council houses were available with low-cost rents then the Housing Benefit bill would be cut at a stroke and there wouldn't be such a hoo-ha about it. Houses ARE being built... but so call 'luxury flats,' by big private developers; and that is causing 'legal' 'Social Cleansing'. We should be taking these properties over for our own class, not for the rich. Public buildings and land should not be sold off on the cheap... National and Local Government deliberately allow the shutdown of public Fire Stations, Libraries, Hospitals, Community Centres, etc,, so we have no places to meet, to not be safe and educated, while the Rich can build their gated communities. Even they are being ripped off... boo hoo.

At last, Sir Phillip Green is being chased legally for taking workers' pensions... the Olympic Stadium was for instance sold to West Ham Football Club for practically nothing and now the TAXPAYER has to pay an additional £50 MILLION to compensate for ill-designed so-called 'retractable seats'. What an oversight by so-called Overseers of the public purse! A resignation has at last occurred. These Private 'Wealth Creators' must be laughing their heads off at your average person. Don't let them divide us ... let's imprison the REAL thieves and take their properties and land back. They are ok with chucking us into underfunded and dangerous jails!

The destructive lingering ideas of Iain Duncan Smith should be dumped. He had to resign in humiliation as Secretary of State for Work & Pensions as he had planned to take money off sick people who need higher toilet seats ... yes this is how they look for savings... instead of stopping the White Elephants of HS2 for example £60 BILLION), Trident (£100 BILLION) etc.

Jeremy Corbyn has promised to allow council housing programme, and to scrap the Work Capability Assessment. The SNP and Green Party voted against Welfare Reform & Work Bill 2015. Before Corbyn's leadership, Labour abstentions allowed that Bill to be passed. Waiting for a 2020 election isn't plausible... we must find parties and organisations NOW that oppose rubbish views and thieving laws. Theresa May is a very weak Prime Minister who doesn't show she knows what she is saying and doing... probably why she won't give a "running commentary on Brexit" for instance... a Government that won't explain itself isn't government. The legal challenge in the High Court may have scuppered her plans. Hee hee!

Let's have an opposition with clear thoughts and reasonable goals FOR US! Workers whether employed or not, must stick together and fix OUR housing problem, not accept Private NON-affordable housing. Let's dump the unravelling right-wing views of the real skiver — the Lazy Rich! An early General Election may rid us of MPs like already dumped Esther McVey!

Benefit sanctions, social cleansing, the Shock Doctrine and loss of social security

Considering an apparent disinterest in the Conservative & Unionist Party Government toward benefit sanctions deaths — leading the DWP to cover up the benefit sanctions deaths enquiry results as best they can and continue to extend the sanctions regime to include low-waged people via Universal Credit conditionality sanctions — I thought of benefit sanctions as being in line with the torture element of what Naomi Klein exposed in her 2007 publication: The Shock Doctrine: The rise of disaster capitalism.(1) (2) (3)

So after looking up what outlining reviews I know of that book, I went to a Naomi Klein interview headed Naomi Klein: Climate Change "Not just about things getting hotter.... It's about things getting meaner". That interview was first published at Common Dreams website, and later republished on the London Green Left blog.(4) (5) It was there that I came across this extract:
Q: .... what brought you to this point? How did you become this articulate advocate of this cause? What changed you? When you say, this changes everything, what changed Naomi Klein?

A: I think my wake-up call was definitely [Hurricane] Katrina. And I was writing the book that I wrote before this, I was writing The Shock Doctrine. And I was in New Orleans during Katrina while it was still underwater and doing reporting. I was there when all the lobbyists were descending on Baton Rouge with their wish lists: Close down public housing. Privatize the school system. And New Orleans, it was just such a horrifying thing to witness first hand. To me, it’s one of those events that actually becomes more shocking with time. With some things you kind of get used to them, but I think actually what happened in New Orleans, it was so shocking that we couldn’t actually believe it or metabolize it, in particular the fact that African-American residents were given one-way tickets out of their city, forcibly relocated, at gunpoint, people were loaded onto buses. And there was no plan to bring them back. And while they were gone, their homes were bulldozed. I mean this is, to me, the more I think about it, the more shocking it becomes and there was so much happening in that moment that I actually think that we could not fully understand that this was — local residents were calling it genocide and I think they had every right to call it that.

I shall leave my readers to investigate further and draw their own metaphors and conclusions for what is really going on under this Government.

Public bodies' collusion with 'property guardian' companies furthers social cleansing

By Dude Swheatie of Kwug

Various tiers of government's dealings with 'property guardian' companies over what is effectively subletting of voids [empty, or rather emptied, council properties] furthers social cleansing and props up property prices beyond ordinary people's ability to pay rent.

The CNJ (Camden New Journal) has already demonstrated Camden Council's collusion with one such company that exploits pundits for the private rented sector (PRS) in LB Camden. http://www.camdennewjournal.com/news/2016/apr/empty-home-schemes-costs-go-property-guardians-ask-where-are-our-rights

The effective privatisation of emptied properties by public bodies to such exploitative 'agents' keeps market rents artificially high and gives added weight to the argument that central, regional and local government conspire toward the social cleansing of London — at least as far as the PRS is concerned. (At the same time, council waiting lists are being downsized.)

Another such company is called Global Guardians. Global Guardians website is http://www.global-guardians.co.uk
Currently listed at http://www.global-guardians.co.uk/property-owners/ are 'a former medical campus' at Archway, 'a former police station in Leytonstone' and former sheltered housing blocks.

My previous investigation of 'available places' on that website before Global Guardians changed the formatting of that section so that it became user-input oriented — showed properties listed as former fire stations. Yet a cachéd [stored] page obtained via a Yahoo search reveals this page that was previously published on the Global Guardians site and that Global Guardians removed from their official site:

Why become a property guardian? ... of the vacant properties we manage a property guardian could protect a very unusual building such as a fire station, ...

An investigation of that cachéd pages contents reveals:

Being a property guardian means you can look after buildings that are interesting in areas that they would not normally be able to live.

Certain parts of cities are now off limits to all but the very rich. However, property guardians can protect living space in these areas. Due to the vast diversity of the vacant properties we manage a property guardian could protect a very unusual building such as a fire station, stately home, office building, library or school.

The separate matters of 'office buildings' being let as residential properties and the moth-balling of fire stations came to a head in a major blaze in Finchley Road, North London as reported in the CNJ:

29 Oct 2015 - The Finchley Road fire ripped through a language school converted into ... the third and fourth floors were written off as vacant office space.
5 Nov 2015 - The homes of 25 people were gutted in Finchley Road, with 10 fire engines and ... The mayor's office did not respond this week when asked to ...
So, it strikes me that London regional government's and councils' dealings with such companies conspires against the public interest while the right wing news media would rather demonise 'migrants' who cross international borders at mortal risk to themselves while laundered money floods the London property market with impunity regularly.

KUWG extend anti-property market greed protest to Genesis HA Willesden offices, Wed 2 Sept, 4pm-5pm

Text by CJ. Placard designs by Dude Swheatie

Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group extends its protests against Genesis Housing Association's CEO (Neil Hadden) proposal to just build private units for sale rather than building 'social' housing with low rents.

Genesis Housing Assn screws the public purse and us

Two weeks ago we picketed Genesis HA Camden;(1) next we picket Genesis HA Willesden offices on Wednesday 2 September, 4pm-5pm, as agreed at KUWG business meeting held on Thursday 27 August.

Osborne's pals sponge off public coffers: First they creamed off housing benefit; then they bought more land at a 'fire sale'

(If it ain't 'social' it must be ANTI-social)...SIMPLES!

The protest will be at :

Utopia House

192-196 High Road
Willesden
London
NW10 2PB

Wednesday 2nd September 4pm-5pm.

Market's greed casts out vulnerable
'Social Landlord'? What a fraud!

The first protest was at their Camden Head office, so we feel a bit of outreach to Brent workers and citizens would show we like to inform all concerned and let the small fry know what the big fry are up to.

Me (CJ), Pam, Alan3, Elizabeth2, Ivy and Giselle going with Michael and Ellen as maybes. (All others welcome, even if only to see Ivy's "GULP AND SHIT" poster!)

Below is a link to a letter in this week's Camden New Journal by Comrade Peter Rutherford who is a persistent thorn in Genesis' backside

(3)
How many eviction suicides already?
Would be good to have union representation at the protest, as sure the workers signed up to be in social roles not real estate agents for the rich! STOP SOCIAL CLEANSING BY WASHING HADDEN'S CRAPPY IDEAS AWAY!!

Anyone else you know should be informed? Could sum1 put this be on facebook?

Hadden puts Satan in charge of Eden?
Homes for life! Not pauper caskets!
Give us homes, give us hope!

Mon 17 Aug @ 2pm: KUWG demonstration against Genesis Housing Association cleansing itself of home building for plebs

Mon 17 Aug, 2pm at
Genesis Housing Association’s HQ:
64 Pratt Street London NW1 0DL (tube: Camden Town)
Postcode map

Social Landord? What a fraud!

Our protest is in response to Genesis Housing Association’s decision to drop social housing: http://www.theguardian.com/housing-network/2015/aug/07/housing-asssociation-no-longer-build-homes-poor-genesis

Please join us! Or blog, tweet or just spread the word.

We consider this ‘The Genesis of UK Oligarchy’

After all, Genesis’ housing stock was funded by tax payers which this private company was meant to manage. But now, Genesis HA has decided to:

  • No longer build any social (read: public) housing
  • Only build private homes for sale, to rent at full market rates or for shared ownership
  • consider selling or raising rents on their existing social housing stock, once the property become vacant (read: once existing tenants get evicted and/or dispersed*),

Genesis Housing Assn screws the public purse and us

How many eviction suicides already?

How many vacant possession suicides already?

Osborne's pals sponge off our public purse

Statement by Ivy from Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group (KUWG) with placard designs and a little editing by Dude Swheatie of Kwug

Note

* as evidenced when KUWG member Nygell Firminger committed suicide right after his eviction from Genesis, who then sold his flat for a reported £375K after North London Coroner ruled that Nygell had committed suicide due to the stress induced by eviction.

All Tory policies and London councils in this together to get poor folk off 'their' monopoly board?

This report from research by Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth lays
bare the social cleansing underway in London with the active support of
local councils, argues a report by Housing Action Southwark & Lambeth.(1)

See also

Veteran Scottish community social worker Bob Holman on why poor people must meet [the Prime Minister of the day].(2)

And now Secretary of State for Work & Pensions Iain Duncan Smith's 2009 admission to the Fabian Society that Thatcherite 'right-to-buy' policies had led to ghettoisation.(3)

And, amidst all the stuff about £12bn further welfare cuts and reducing the 'benefit cap' and disability benefits still further, consider: is social cleansing now exposed as the end game of Government social policies, or is it an 'unintended consequence'?

Consultation on homeless hostel in Brondesbury Park

By Dude Swheatie of Kwug

At Kilburn Times article page Brondesbury Park residents have two weeks to oppose homeless hostel on their doorstep(1), Wembley Matters(2) blogger Martin Francis has placed this comment:
"Perhaps Conservative Cllr Shaw should haven word a with her Conservative government about policies that makes people homeless - soon to be extended to 18-21 year olds."
Perhaps others would like to comment on this matter via the comments space at that Kilburn Time article page or via a blog piece?

Meanwhile, I was amused by this NIMBYist paragraph because of something that happened under LB Haringey in Tottenham:
Rob Churm, 46, who founded the action group said: “There are a lot of parents with children and plenty of vulnerable and elderly residents living here and many are concerned about increased risk from the hostel, especially as hostel users will have to walk through the estate to get to the block.”
Q: "Well, what did happen in Tottenham?"

Maybe the 'residents action group' members are among those aspiring to buy their social housing home at reduced price, as per the recent Tory General Election Manifesto? Maybe we could invite one of the opponents of this hostel to a KUWG meeting as 'guest speaker' — but maybe with more time for them to answer questions than they would feel really comfortable with?

'Bedroom tax' — remember 5 September

Remember to get your MP to vote on 5 September to change how the 'bedroom tax' operates

By 38Degrees

38 Degrees Logo

A year ago the government brought in the bedroom tax - the benefit cut that dictates where poor people should live. [1] We've all heard the horror stories in the news. And for some of us, it’s meant struggling to pay the rent or even being forced out of our homes. [2]

Well, now we have an chance to scrap some of the worst parts of it, and quickly.

Andrew George is a Liberal Democrat MP who’s campaigned and voted against the bedroom tax in the past. He’s proposing a law which would change how the bedroom tax works. [3] If we can get enough MPs to vote for it, he estimates that most of those currently hit would no longer be affected.

So, how can we make it happen? The first vote is on 5th September. We need to make sure MPs have the date in their diaries now, so enough of them promise to turn up and vote for it.

Can you email your MP now and tell them to vote
for Andrew George’s new law?
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/change-bedroom-tax

The office team have seen the draft of the law. It’ll be published this week. It isn’t perfect – it wouldn’t fully scrap the bedroom tax. But it’s a big step in that direction. As well as covering the bedroom tax, the proposed law should also help families in need of affordable housing. Right now, its the best chance we have to reduce the number of lives hit by these unfair cuts.

If enough of us email our MPs and let them know we want them to vote for the law, we could push MPs to vote the right way. This would help people living with disabilities, people in sheltered housing, people who’ve been in their home for more than three years, and people whose council can’t find them somewhere else to live.

38 Degrees members have come together before to change bad laws - this April our pressure on MPs helped stop the hospital closure clause. [4] When we all contact our MPs at once, they take notice. The bedroom tax is a nasty attack on the most vulnerable people in society. Let’s do our best to get the worst of it scrapped.

So let’s make sure enough MPs turn up and vote. 5th September is a Friday, and MPs often book other meetings in on Fridays. So it’s important we get this vote goes in their diaries now. Please can you email your MP now?
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/change-bedroom-tax

Thanks for being involved,

Rebecca, Rachel, Blanche, David and the 38 Degrees team

PS: Here’s what Andrew George MP says about this vote in his own words:

"I'd like to see the bedroom tax scrapped altogether, and I expect many 38 Degrees members would agree with me. But at this stage it would be hard to get enough MPs to vote for that. So my strategy is to focus on trying to help out as many of those who are suffering from the bedroom tax as I can by passing legislation to scrap the worst aspects of it. It's the most realistic way of making a difference right now. So please help me persuade other MPs to get behind these changes."

City of Westminster pursues social cleansing big time

City of Westminster pursues social cleansing big time

Gemma and others in the Kilburn Unemployed Workers Group are supporting Community Champion Keeda Wood against being forced to leave the home she has occupied for at least the last three years, and against City of Westminster forcing her to leave the borough.

Reflecting the mercilessness with which City of Westminster are going about social cleansing, there are these items from Camden New Journal's West End Extra:

Metropolitan Police team up with Brent Housing Partnership, but what is their real objective?

Kilburn High Road Stn/Cambridge Avenue bus stop
The advertising hoarding on the left reads:

We're tackling drug dealing on the South Kilburn Estate by carrying out drug warrants and working with Brent Housing Partnership to evict problem tenants, resulting in 135 fewer complaints last year.
— Metropolitan Police

That is all very convenient, it seems to me, when Brent Housing Partnership really wants to clear poor people out of LB Brent. Has the SKE really been a manifestation of Skid Row?
